There’s no way around it, New Balance’s footwear roster is stacked with classics. Whether they’ve earned their stripes over decades of hard work like the 990 or they’re recent favorites like the 650, there’s little to distinguish which New Balance sneakers deserve rotation space over others.
In the Highsnobiety office, we’ve long debated which New Balance pairs are the best, and we’re no closer to coming to a conclusion. We have, however, managed to round up 6 Highsnobiety staffers to detail their favorite New Balance sneakers from the latest collection. These pairs will be seeing us stylishly through fall, winter, and beyond this year.
Ranging from fan-favorites like the 2002R through to newcomers (born in the ‘00s, revived in ’22) like the 1906R, we’ve firmly covered the spectrum of New Balance shoes for fall. Our selection caters to style and substance — as is expected from New Balance — readying your rotation for tougher weather without sacrificing your aesthetic.
650
New Balance
New Balance took the already attractive 550s, put a collar on them, and gave us these 650. It’s a classic to style, whether it’s warm with shorts or cold with jeans stacking on them. I also just love how the high-top build makes the silhouette look even more retro. — Ahmed, Affiliate Partnerships Manager
1906R
New Balance
We already know from brief chats over Slack that the 1906R is a divisive silhouette but I just can’t get past the fact that I love it. The collaboration with Thisisneverthat really brought the style to my attention, and New Balance has since started to push the silhouette with new colorways. This neutral colorway perfectly suits the design, making a fairly complex shoe feel minimal. — Alek, Branded Shopping Editor
MADE in USA 990v3
New Balance
I love it when we get general releases of classics like the 990v3. Even though I love the grey colorway (that everyone seems to own), this one has more contrast on the upper and makes it pop a little bit from the crowd we’re likely to see this season. — Yulia, Market Editor
MADE in USA 993 Core
New Balance
It’s a grey New Balance, so you know from square one that it’s a winner. I always favor the 993 because of the slightly chunkier sole and the small “N” logo that makes it look so clean. I get what Yulia means about standing out from the crowd, but I think the best way to do that is to switch up the silhouette. — Viktor, Brand & Affiliate Partnerships Manager
2002RD
New Balance
I’m a proud owner of the 2002R and I can vouch for the fact that they’re up there with the most comfortable shoes on the market. Usually, this kind of comfort comes hand in hand with a sportier silhouette, but the 2002R is super versatile. Also, I love the used look on this pair with the jagged Protection Pack panels. — Jonathan, Affiliate Marketing Intern
MADE in USA 990v5 Core
New Balance
For me, this is the ultimate timeless sneaker. It’s had a permanent place in my collection for a few years now and it’s going nowhere! I love them just as much today as I did on the first day I got them. Classic, extremely wearable, and the comfort is unmatched. — Rhianna, Market Editor
