SAN JOSE, Calif. — Mariah McCoy started her freshman year at Pleasant Hill, California’s College Park High School with webcast classes, awkward online social gatherings and not a single real-live school event to meet new friends.
But as classes resume this fall on campus with no social distancing, no random COVID-19 testing and no face mask mandates, it’s the closest Mariah, now a 15-year-old junior, and just about every other California teenager have come to the traditional high school experience. And they’re embracing it. Even volleyball games are getting standing-room-only crowds.

The Tar Heels will be at the former Turner Field in Atlanta to face Georgia State. It’s the first time in the Panthers’ 13-year history that they’re hosting a Power Five school. North Carolina is 2-0 after a 63-61 win over App State. Georgia is 0-1 after opening its season with a 35-14 loss at South Carolina. The Tar Heels are led by quarterback Drake Maye, who has thrown for nine TDs with no interceptions.
Finding out that shrinkflation, adorkable, subvariant and even pumpkin spice are now officially in the dictionary might make you exclaim “Yeet!” Publisher Merriam-Webster announced Wednesday that those are five of the 370 words and phrases it added to its dictionary this month. Merriam-Webster’s editor at large Peter Sokolowski says while some of the new additions may provoke debate, words are only added to the dictionary when there is clear and sustained evidence of use. Several words pushed into the public consciousness during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic were also added, including subvariant, booster dose, and emergency use authorization.

Indiana snapped an eight-game losing streak last week by winning its first Big Ten game since 2020. The Hoosers will try to make it two straight wins when they host Idaho of the Football Championship Subdivision. The Hoosiers know what a 2-0 start means — they’ve played in bowl games each of the previous two times they’ve done it. But they also know the Vandals nearly stole a win last week at Washington State. Idaho linebacker Fa’avae Fa’avae had 11 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in the 24-17 loss at Washington State. The Hoosiers remember him well from the 11-tackle performance he had in last year’s matchup.
No. 3 Ohio State will try to not to look past heavy underdog Arkansas State on Saturday. One week after grinding out an emotional 21-10 win over Notre Dame, the Buckeyes will be a six-touchdown favorite over the Red Wolves from Jonesboro, Arkansas. Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud said the team will try to not to fall into last year’s habit of “playing down” to some opponents. Arkansas State coach Butch Jones wants to emerge from the game with his team’s health and morale intact. That’s balanced against the big check Arkansas State will take home for the trip.

No. 7 Oklahoma has already moved up two spots in the AP Top 25 and is positioning itself for a run at a playoff berth down the road. A loss would be virtually impossible to recover from and would slow the energy the program has been building under first-year coach Brent Venables. The Sooners seek a second consecutive solid win heading into a road test at Nebraska the following week. Kent State, among the favorites in the Mid-American Conference, hopes to improve on last week’s 45-20 loss to Washington.

NFL teams will stencil “It Takes All of Us” and “End Racism” in end zones for the third straight season as part of the league’s Inspire Change social justice initiative. Players can choose one of seven messages for their helmets this year. The six others remain the same: “End Racism,” “Stop Hate,” “It Takes All of Us,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Inspire Change” and “Say Their Stories.”
U.S. Davis Cup captain Mardy Fish will miss the group stage matches in Glasgow, Scotland, next week because he got COVID-19 and Bob Bryan will fill in. Bryan won 16 Grand Slam doubles championships with his twin brother and was on the U.S. team that won the Davis Cup title in 2007. Frances Tiafoe is slated to be part of the American team that will face Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Glasgow from Sept. 13-18. Tiafoe will play in the U.S. Open semifinals Friday. Other members of the U.S. roster are Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jack Sock and Rajeev Ram.
The fictional character Roxie Hart has many awful attributes, she’s adulterous, narcissistic, scheming, manipulating and murderous. She joins a Broadway that is starting to open its arms to transgender actors. Set in the 1920s, “Chicago” is a scathing satire of how show business and the media make celebrities out of criminals. MIAMI — Hurricane Earl is is forecast to turn into a major hurricane later Thursday, with tropical storm conditions expected to begin in Bermuda soon.
South Carolina and new quarterback Spencer Rattler visit No. 16 Arkansas in the SEC opener for both teams. Rattler will need to play better for the Gamecocks to pull the upset. He passed for 227 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his South Carolina debut after transferring from Oklahoma. A South Carolina win would raise the stakes of its SEC-East home clash with No. 2 Georgia next week, while a win for the Razorbacks would put the team in a good position to enter its Sept. 24 rivalry game against No. 6 Texas A&M undefeated.
Purdue had a few extra days to figure out what went wrong at the end of its season-opening loss. Indiana State will be playing for much more than on-the-field victories this season after two players were killed and two others seriously injured in a tragic August car accident. On Saturday, the inspired Sycamores will try to beat the Boilermakers for the first time. Purdue has won all five previous meetings and owns won 10 straight wins over Football Championship Series foes. An Associated Press review has found that nearly 1 in 3 Republican candidates for statewide offices that play a role in overseeing, certifying or defending elections supported overturning the 2020 presidential election. That review shows that of the 86 Republican candidates vying for those positions in 37 states in the November general election, one-third have echoed Trump’s lies that widespread fraud cost him reelection. Only 40% of these Republican candidates would directly say that Democrat Joe Biden was legitimately elected as president in 2020. That’s raising the stakes for the fall vote, particularly for contests that play a vital role in validating election results.

Stoltenberg said that “there is no sign of Russia giving up its goal of taking control of Ukraine.” He was speaking on the sidelines of a U.S.-led Ukraine backers meeting in Germany. The NATO chief said the war ”is approaching a pivotal moment.” Stoltenberg is urging NATO allies to stump up vital winter equipment and ramp up weapons production for Ukraine.
Japan’s governing party says an internal survey has found that nearly half of its national lawmakers had ties to the Unification Church, in a widening controversy that emerged after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Abe was shot to death during a campaign speech July. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, reportedly told police he killed Abe because of his apparent link to the Unification Church. That led to revelations of widespread ties between governing Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers and the church. The South Korea-based church has been accused of inappropriate recruitment and business tactics and of pressuring adherents to make large donations, which the church denies.
LOS ANGELES — In 2020, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the nearly 20,000-member-strong group that puts on the Primetime Emmy Awards each fall, was in the midst of much the same reassessment of its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as Hollywood’s other most influentia…

Frank Gore had a flair for drama when he played for the Miami Hurricanes. He was fearless. And his son tries to play that same way. No. 15 Miami (1-0) is a four-touchdown favorite over Southern Miss (0-1) going into the matchup on Saturday, but that doesn’t faze Golden Eagles running back Frank Gore Jr. whatsoever. Gore Jr. is returning to his hometown, to play his father’s alma mater, and sees it as nothing but a big opportunity.
Officials say the cost of the German chancellery’s planned building extension will rise to 777 million euros ($773 million), which is 177 million euros more than initially planned. The increase in costs is related to integrating new climate protection measures, a tunnel for deliveries that hadn’t been included in the initial building plan, rising prices of material due to inflation and other issues. A senior German official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy said Thursday that the new extension is needed because the chancellery’s staff has grown from 400 to 750 employees. Currently, about 200 staff members work at different locations across the capital because there is not enough office space in the chancellery.

Now everyone is starting to believe coach Tom Allen was right when he brought Bazelak to Bloomington and named him the starter.
