After enduring setbacks in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, transaction volume in the commercial real estate arena across the U.S. bounced back in 2021, according to data from commercial real estate news and research group Commercial Property Executive.
Survey respondents to CPE’s research reported strong levels of investment sales activity, with our 23 top performers completing more than $951 billion in transactions in 2021. That compares to 26 respondents completing just $523.4 billion in 2020.
Many of those top performers mentioned in that survey include brokerages with presences in the Triangle, including CBRE (NYSE: CBRE), Cushman & Wakefield, Avison Young and Lee & Associates. CPE’s data is based on self-reported data from the firms themselves, just like Triangle Business Journal data. Our latest list centers on the largest local commercial real estate brokerages and ranks them by the number of full-time commercial brokers. All told, the 25 largest Triangle brokerages currently employ 363 full-time brokers, up from 352 last year.
In the latest Emerging Trends in Real Estate report from Urban Land Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Triangle fares well in a variety of categories. The report reflects the views of individuals who completed a survey or were interviewed as part of the research process for this report.
To get an idea of the scope of the survey, ULI and PwC researchers interviewed about 930 individuals, and survey responses were received from about 1,200 individuals. A number of company types were represented in the survey, including private property owners, commercial developers, real estate advisory firms and private equity real estate investors.
Here’s how the Triangle fared in various categories in the report’s Markets to Watch section, followed by a look at the local commercial real estate landscape.
