Danbury resident Marietta Molinaro Bailey will celebrate her 100th birthday with her family and friends on Sept. 11. Bailey is an active member of the Danbury Senior Center, as well as part of the knitting club at the Danbury library. She still has vegetable and flower gardens, and also is a member of the quilting club, making quilts for cancer patients. She enjoys walking the Danbury Fair mall.
Bailey arrived in the U.S. from Italy at the age of 1 and came to Danbury. She married Gene Bailey, a World War II veteran, in 1947 and they had two children, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He died in 2008.
She and her family will celebrate her birthday at Gisella’s Ristorante in Danbury, while her friends from the mall are planning a celebration on Sept. 13 at the mall.

Registration is available for the Danbury Youth Soccer Club’s fall 2022 season of recreational soccer, which was formerly called in-house soccer.
The club is celebrating its 45th year of soccer. The club will formally celebrate the anniversary the night of Dec. 2. Details will follow in the future.
There is no late fee in 2022. The season will start with a play day Sept. 10, followed by eight weeks game games, and practice days.

The Danbury Library is presenting a free, virtual event about maintenance, upkeep, and new cars at 11 a.m. Thursday via Zoom.
Registration is recommended.
Participants will receive a link to the meeting via email once they have registered.
The event is titled: ‘“Danbury presents: Ask the AAA “Car Doctor”’ – virtual car care information.
John Paul, who is known as the AAA “Car Doctor” will cover maintenance steps and best practices to keep vehicles running smoothly. He has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive business and will answer questions from attendees.

The 23rd Annual Brazilian Flag Raising Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Danbury City Hall.
A civic event to honor Brazil’s Independence Day, the Danbury Brazilian Flag-Raising ceremony has been organized by the Bacelar-Palmares family for the past 23 years. Commonly called “Sete de Setembro,” the event celebrates Brazil’s Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal on September 7, 1822. This year marks the 200th year of Brazil’s Independence.
Mayor Dean Esposito and Consulate General of Brazil in Hartford Ambassador Fernando Mello Vidal will deliver remarks, and two members of the Brazilian community will be recognized for their success and service to the community.
Abby Ribeiro, director of Client Support Services at The Center for Empowerment & Education (formerly known as the Women’s center), provides prevention, crisis intervention, and support services regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, and other major life transitions. She will be recognized for her community service.
Eduardo Santos Braga is an entrepreneur, and owner of Menino Market, LLC, which opened in 2019 at 49 South St., and Menino Market II, in 2021, at 290 White St. When most businesses were struggling during the pandemic, he was able to grow his business. He will be recognized for his business success.

The Danbury Library is presenting a free, live and virtual author talk titled: “Raising Thrivers: Parenting Tips & Tools to Help Kids Thrive – Author Talk with Dr. Michele Borba,” on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Community members are invited to join in the conversation with Borba, an author and child development expert, as she discusses her book, “Thrivers: Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Thrive.”

The Braver Angels Connecticut Alliance is inviting the public to “Moving Beyond Polarization: Making Politics Work,” a special event demonstrating how two state representatives —one red, one blue — can bridge the political divide.
Braver Angels co-founder Bill Doherty will moderate a unique discussion between state Rep. Stephen Harding, R-Brookfield, and state Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey, D-Fairfield. Connecticut Public and The Governor M. Jodi Rell Center for Public Service at the University of Hartford are co-sponsoring the event.
The virtual program—set for Sept. 8 from 7:30-9 p.m. on Zoom—is free and open to people of any and all political viewpoints. To register, visit bit.ly/ct-beyond.
The goals of this discussion includes: improving understanding of the experiences, values, and beliefs of a member of the other political party in today’s polarized environment; discovering areas of commonality and differences; discussing current challenges in state politics; and exploring ideas for reducing political polarization.

The YMCA is also hosting an Outdoor Adventure Day on Sept. 10. Participants will be able to challenge themselves on the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut’s brand new outdoor climbing tower and zipline. Hour timeslots can be reserved to soar down the 80 yard zipline, and climb the 35 tower that is located on the Camp Greenknoll Campus.
The opportunity is open to 10 participants per hour. Each person must register.
The activity is open to people 9 and older. The activity has a maximum weight of 250 pounds.
Regional YMCA members are $5. Non-Regional YMCA members are $15.

Ridgefield
The Ridgefield Theater Barn has opened registration for its fall workshops and announced the venue’s 2022 and 2023 children’s workshop season.
The productions will be “Oliver, Jr,” for teens, and “The Day the Aliens Attacked Ridgefield,” for younger performers.
The venue has also announced its entire season of teen and youth workshops through the end of the school year, offering parents and the children the opportunity to register in advance and potentially save money with discounted packages if the children are enrolled for an entire season of workshops.
The workshops are for students in the third through the 12th grade who have an interest in acting, improv, singing or musical theater.
The programs are non-audition based, inclusive to all and offer a fun, nurturing environment where kids can be themselves. Due to the support of Arts for Everyone, financial aid and scholarships are available to any student.
Other offerings later in the season are “Glee” and “Glee, Jr” (two sessions of each), more teen and youth plays in the Winter, and a youth musical and two teen intensives (Improv and Musical Theater) in the Spring.

The Jewish Community Center in Sherman is presenting a program titled “From The Broken Hill I Sing to You: God, Sex, and Politics in the Work of Leonard Cohen,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, along with other guests and speakers.

Southbury
Arts Escape is accepting online registration for a four-afternoon session workshop, Independent Acrylic Studio Class, Painting Cityscapes in Acrylics, this September at the nonprofit’s space at 493 Heritage Road, Suite 4C in Southbury.
The class, taught by artist Anda Styler from Sandy Hook, is for intermediate and advanced acrylic painters.
The workshops are from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning this week through Sept. 29.
Styler will also supply reference photos prior to class for students who prefer to work on the same painting as her.
Students are required to bring their own supplies. Paper towels, and water containers are provided.
Acetate overlays will be used during individual instruction of the workshops.

Arts Escape is also accepting online registration for a 2 1/2 hour demonstration in pastels from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
The class is taught by its instructor Karen Israel, a signature member of the American Artists Professional League, master circle with the International Association of Pastel Societies, and master pastelist with the Pastel Society of America.
The class is appropriate for students with some or no experience, as well as students who want to become adept at pastels.
The instructor will speak about materials, color mixing, layering, and how to create volume with the objects. There will also be general instruction about the basics of drawing and perspective. The topics of value, hue, and saturation of color will be discussed and demonstrated. No supplies are necessary.
The instructor is an artist member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Copley Society in Boston and the Lyme Art Association.
